Magnox’s mission is to find ways to safely dismantle all the old nuclear power stations that no longer produce electricity. This includes taking care of the nuclear waste on each site, as well as looking at how the land can be used in the future.
As a Civil Engineer, it’s my job to look at the buildings on the site and how we can demolish them safely. We also look at any buildings that might be staying for a very long time and how we can keep them up over hundreds of years. I also help with any new buildings that are being constructed, which will support Magnox’s missions.

My Typical Day:
I wake up very early and go to the gym or go for a run. I then have breakfast and get to work for 8:15am. From there I have meetings, or write reports/emails or visit people on site. I have lunch at around 12:30 and then carry on with the meetings or writing. I finish work at 4:35pm and head home!

I wake up at around 4:15am and go to the gym, while it’s nice and quiet! After this I go home, change and have breakfast before leaving for work. I get to work at 8:15 and my day can include anything! I have a lot of meetings (with contractors, clients and my co-workers) and these meetings are either done online or face-to-face. Sometimes we go for a walk round the nuclear reactor buildings, so we can physically see (and sometimes touch!) what we are talking about.
If I’m not in meetings, I am usually writing reports or emails. Most of our work is done through these reports, sending information and making decisions in them that can affect the rest of the site. It can be quite scary making such big decisions, but it always works out in the end!
I finish work at around 4:35pm and come home. In the evenings I can go for a walk, hit the driving range to practice my golf or go to rugby training.

What I'd do with the prize money:
I’d probably work with the Institution of Civil Engineers and organise something like a bridge building session/competition with local schools!
